2003 Archive

May 3, 2003

Greetings to all.  Finally, the 2003 season is here, the weather is warming up and the fish are starting to bite!

Right now, the fluking is very slow in the sound. The draggers are catching some fluke, but they definitely are not biting too well for us.  The reports I have received so far about the Blackfishing have been decent. Definitely a few to be caught on the wrecks. We start tomorrow (Sunday 5/5/2003) and will be Blackfishing everyday for at least the next week and half. Then we'll see how the fluke are shaping up  and make a decision from there.

Will keep you posted as more info comes in.  Hope to see you soon and we look forward to a great season with you all.

May 7, 2003

Its been a great start to the blackfish season. Today was one of the best spring blackfsih trips we've seen in many years!  9 fares limited out by 12:30 with plenty of 5-7 lb fish in the mix. All the action came off two wrecks using both green crabs and clams. Joe Deptula easily caught his limit which included 3 fish over 7 lbs. The bite has begun.

We will be sailing daily at 7am for blackfish through May 16.

May 12, 2003

Some real good blackfishing continues. Today (Sunday) 8 fares had 60 keepers to 8 lbs fishing two wrecks. Several guys had their limit. Crabs and clams both worked well.

Well be blackfishing daily through May 18.

May 16, 2003

These fish will drive you nuts. Wednesday we could hardly get a bite even on the best wrecks. Ended up with only 12 keepers for the day. Thursday was just the opposite. Despite the hard tide, the fish bite very well on one wreck and that was enough to make the day. 10 guys had 30 keepers before the tide began to run hard again. A few big ones too including the largest so far this year weighing in at 9 lbs.  We are going to continue blackfish for a few more days after yesterdays good results. everyday next week except Tuesday.

May 24, 2003

Well its been a great spring blackfish season, one of the best in years. Our last day was wednesday before this lousy weather moved in. Fishing was excellent as 4 fares had 35 keepers to 7 lbs in flat calm conditions. A great way to end. But its time to give the pieces we fish a break so they are ready to go for the fall. Its best not to fish them too hard or else they take a long time to build up again.

Now its time for fluke and striped bass. Fluking has really started to pick up off Smithtown and Stony Brook and the bass are setting up nicely off B11, Sound Beach and Cranes. If its like the last few years, the next two months should see some excellent results.

We will be fluking everyday and Striped Bass fishing every evening. Hope to see you soon.

The Fluking is really picking up. The sand eels have hatched and are on the shoals. When the drifting conditions are favorable, fluking has been very good. Though our biggest fish so far is only 6 lbs I have seen several doormats weighed in up to 10 lbs caught right off Cedar Beach and B9.

We sailed with two customers on Tuesday and caught a great mixed bag for the day. When the current was slow, we limited out on big porgies off Rocky Point to go with a few blackfish to 6 lbs. We also jigged some bluefish and finished the day (once we had a good drift) with six keeper fluke to 4 lbs and a lot of shorts. Not a bad day.

We look foward to a great run of fluke during the upcoming month. Hope to see you soon.

June 19, 2003

The fluking is holding up very well in our area. Most days are seeing a very good pick of keepers fishing mainly off port jeff and Mt Sinai. Pool on most days has been around 5 lbs and a few big fish up to 9 lbs have been caught locally.

On Tuesday 8 fares had 25 keepers to 5 lbs.
Yesterday, 4 fares braved the weather for a very good morning bite before going home early due to the weather. It was worth the effort though, as one fare had his limit and then some, another had one shy of his limit, and a ten year old boy came out for his birthday and had over 20 fluke for the morning, 3 of which were keepers.

Hope to see you soon,

June 23, 2003

Finally got out fishing again Sunday afternoon after the weather cleared a bit. The bite was very good on the change of tide at B11.

Today was also very good at B11. 3 fares limited out on fluke to go along with lots of shorts, a few bluefish and one 27" bass. The beginning of the ebb was especially good. Bucktails worked best when the current was light, but bait was better once the tide picked up.

Looking foward to a few days of sun to go along with the good fishing!

July 8, 2003

Fluking was slow around the new moon but has picked up a lot the past few days. Some nice fish around up to 8 lbs. Today a light crowd had a steady pick all day. Lots of shorts but plenty of keepers mixed in. Averaged 5 to 7 keepers a man by days end.

Also, for those who love porgy fishing, the evening trips have been amazing!! Fares are limiting out in under two hours on big scup. The bite really turns on around sunset.

Friday July 18, 2003

Excellent fluking today fishing locally. Ton of sand eels up on the shoal. 7 fares had close to 50 keepers on the day and well over 200 shorts. Good steady pick all day long.
Sailing open boat all weekend. The evening porgy trips remain a consistent Bail Job!

Friday July 25, 2003

Finally got out again today after 3 days at the dock because of the weather. Had a real good pick of fluke all morning with a few nices ones 4-5 lbs mixed in. Lots of shorts, lots of action. Bucktails worked excellent today. Some were close to their limit.

Evening porgy trips have been great with some real bigs ones starting to show now at the middle grounds.

August 5, 2003

Bass and blue fishing has been excellent the past few days on the ebb tide. The last two evening trips have been especially good with great diamond jigging for mainly bluefish with a few bass mixed in.

When conditions allow the chunking bite has also been great with several bass landed over twenty lbs on bunker. The flood tide has been slower, but there have been some quality porgies to 3 lbs at the middle grounds to keep things interesting. Sailing two combo trips daily.

8/7/2003
The great diamond jigging and chunking has continued for the past few days at the middle. Yesterday's evening trip saw great action mainly on jigs. We caught on the flood, right through the slack and into the ebb which is rare. Ton of butterfish and anchovies out there so hopefully the bite will continue for a while.

8/9/2003
It has been a great week fishing at the middle grounds. All week the shoal has been loaded with with butterfish and anchovies. The diamond jigging was excellent on mainly bluefish to 10 lbs, though occasionally a nice bass was caught up to 20 lbs. The jigging slowed a bit friday, though we did catch a decent amount of big porgies to make the day.

Friday evening saw a few great shots of fish but otherwise the bait was scattered and the jigging was slower. The evening porgy bite was excellent though. Sailing two combo trips daily. Hope to see you soon.

8/13/2003
Fishing for the most part has been very good the past 3 days. Sunday was a BAIL job! Everyone on board including the young kids had their limit on bluefish. A few nice keeper bass were also landed. Sunday and Monday evening trips were slow due to the slack tide in the middle of the trip, though some big porgies were caught to keep things interesting.  Tuesday saw a decent pick of porgies in the morning and the day ended with a few great drifts diamond jigging for bass and blues. Tues evening saw some real good action on big porgies at the middle.

When conditions allow the chunking bite has also been great with several bass landed over twenty lbs on bunker. The flood tide has been slower, but there have been some quality porgies to 3 lbs at the middle grounds to keep things interesting. Sailing two combo trips daily.

Friday 8/15/2003

Bail Job diamond jigging today. 9 fares had their limit and more on bluefish to 12 lbs plus a few keepers striped bass to 15 lbs. Caught well on both tides. Huge piles of fish and tons of butterfish and anchovies in the area. Couldn't Miss! Yesterday was also very good both day and night with a few keeper bass and lots of bluefish. Excellent fishing right now. Few spots still open on Sunday am trip.

Sunday 8/24/2003

Excellent day today both jigging and bottom fishing. Lots of bluefish on the surface right off Mt Sinai. Then we headed to the middle and bailed the porgies. The porgie bite the last two days and evenings has been incredible.

Yesterday we made one drop and after 2 1/2 hours everyone had enough. Today was just as good. Hopefully the bite should hold up now right through the fall.

Friday 8/26/2003

Incredible fishing the past few days. Several miles of bluefish from Mt Sinai to Cranes have been on the surface feeding on peanut bunker. Total Bail job. Porgy fishing could not be any better. quality and quantity. Today all fares limited out on bluefish and then limited out on porgies by noon.

Great fishing.

Monday 9/1/2003

The real fine fishing continues on our combo trips. Diamond jigging Friday, Saturday and today saw some real quality bass and bluefish. Yesterday was a little tough with the rough conditions and very fast drift, though we did manage a pick of mainly bluefish. Otherwise, there has been lots of bluefish, weighing into the low teens and several keeper bass to 38 inches in the mix. Fishing the incoming in 40-60 ft of water in the middle grounds has been the key.

The porgy fishing today was phenominal, as it has been on most trips both day and night. Limit catches of 50 fish in an hour or two have been common. We look forward to the continued great fishing right through the fall.

Wednesday 9/17

Finally got out again the past few days after nearly a week of bad weather.

Fishing yesterday was phenominal in the middle on the outgoing tide. The whole rip was loaded with bluefish and big porgies. You could take your pick of what you wanted. Some chose to catch double header porgies. Other bailed bluefish on jigs. A great trip.

Today's trip was slower than yesterday. We decided to try a few wrecks for the first time this fall. Every wreck had some big porgies and sea bass as well as a few blackfish (which were thrown back). But no great numbers. Maybe after this blow it will push a few more fish on the wrecks.

Blackfishing starts October 13. Book ahead if you can as many of the trips are already filling up.

Saturday 9/20

Very good day today. Jigging was great on the outgoing tide in the middle. Many guys had their limit. Porgy fishing was also good with few sea bass mixing in to 3 lbs. Porgies were good size, up to 15 inches.

Monday, 10/6

Great day today fishing the middle grounds. Started on a wreck on the change of tide and had an excellent catch of Big porgies and some sea bass to 3 lbs. Once the outgoing picked up the south rip was loaded with acres of bluefish. All fares easily limited out.

Headed home early. Wish every day was like this!

Blackfish

Very good day today. Fished two wrecks and ended up with over 100 keepers for the day. Good steady pick on both drops. Few guys were close to their limit for the day. Most fish were 3-5 lbs with a few bigger ones beginning to show. Also had a mix of some big sea bass to 4 lbs.

Desmond

Monday 10/13

Today was our opening day for the blackfish season. Not a bad start. We had 30 keepers up to 7 lbs. Few nice ones. Mix of a few porgies and sea bass. Best fishing was on a piece in 25 feet of water all on green crabs.

Well be sailing daily for blackfish into December.

Saturday Nov 1, 2003

Blackfishing has really picked up the last few days. Fishing was tough around the moon with very hard current and lousy weather. Some days saw 30-50 fish on the day and for the most part it was tough fishing. During this week though the bite really started to turn on and many of the deeper spots (50-60 feet) began to produce some quality fish.

Today saw picture perfect weather conditions, light current and awesome blackfishing for Kil Song and friends from the Noreast web site. We had fish to 9 lbs and almost everyone on board had their limit! All this fishing in t-shirts!

We look foward to a great month ahead.

Desmond

Saturday 11/8

Blackfishing is definitely in full swing right now. Fishing has been excellent on a daily basis with limit catches the norm and fish to 10 lbs almost every day. Thursday saw one 3 hour drop of non stop action on fish to 10 lbs before calling it a day. Yesterday was also excellent. Pool fish was 10.5 weighed on a hand scale.

The deeper wrecks should really turn on now with this weekends cold snap. Should be a few great weeks of fishing ahead!

Wednesday 11/19

Blackfishing has been very good the last two days since things have settled down from the hard winds from a few days ago. Sunday, the bite was definitely off after the blow. The fish were very picky, though 15 anglers did manage 45-50 keepers for the day with a few fish 7-8 lbs. Monday saw a steady bite most of the day as 22 anglers caught close to their limit of blackfish to 9 lbs. Tuesday was also very good as 18 anlglers had over 150 keepers with several big fish over 8 lbs. We did not sail today due to the weather but hopefully we will be out again soon as the conditions improve.

Check out our web site to see some recent photos of some big blackfish!

Wednesday 12/5

Well, we are calling it a year! After a very good month of fishing, the blackfish for no apparent reason decided to stop biting in the sound. The water was still in the low 50's which is ideal, but no matter what we tried we just couldn't get the fish to bite well. So, we are packing it in for 2003. Just wanted to say thank you to all of you who sailed with us this year. It was a great season and we look foward to seeing every one again in the spring! We will be staring in mid Arpil for blackfish. Hope to see you then.

Have a great winter everyone. Speak to you soon.
